There’s a young girl. She sits by the window and watches the rain.
The trees weep with delicate liquid crystals. Ants fight off atom bombs packaged in droplets. Birds play in the infinite waterfall. Lovers, like children, dance through the puddles. The sky is bleak, but the earth is vibrant.
Only in a rainstorm cultivated by the perfect imperfection of nature can everything coexist in harmony; sadness (the trees), happiness (the lovers), destruction (the ants), and whimsy (the birds).
Caught in the equilibrium of the world, the girl absorbs all but discerns none. Lost in her dreams sometimes bordering on nightmares, the dull pitter-patter entrances her like a ballad of old.
She exists in her past, present, and future simultaneously. She relives regrets and makes silent vows of change.
Her mind quiets as a man inquires about her thoughts. She gazes at him, eyes glinting with wisdom of one hundred lifetimes, and smiles with a hint of melancholic hope. She asks the man, “How can I capture the intricacies of a limitless universe using our finite language of just a million words?” The man could not understand her words or her heart and once again she was left in her own company.
She returns to the ants, now building a new branch to their tunnel since a leaf blocked their original direction. She ponders the path she has traveled and how she got here. She glances at a tabby cat curled up in an armchair and murmurs to herself the age-old question, “What do I wish I knew in the past?” She laughs to herself knowing the answer is just as infinite as the universe. Nevertheless, she opens her journal attempting to pen an answer.
Her curt phrases hold deep emotion; together they create poetry. She wrote:
You are music
Pet all animals
Twirl in the rain
Eat the food
Don’t be scared
Travel the world
Take more photos
People make life
Make new friends
Friends will disappoint
Love everyone fully
Pain is okay
Calm your mind
They won’t win
Give yourself sparingly
Savor the silence
Appreciate the magnificent
Experience the ordinary
Memories will fade
Feelings will stay
Just breathe
Follow your soul
Her words ebb and flow with the intensity of melodies and harmonies in a symphony. She reads her words and sees her spirit looking back. Every cross-section of her existence is laced with beautiful chaos.
The young woman sits by the window watching the rain. The universe whispers to her one word out of a million in answer to her questions…
